asb law is delighted to have been shortlisted in the prestigious FT Innovative Lawyers Awards Europe 2016 for “Innovation in New Model Legal Businesses – Structural and Behavioural Change”.

The FT Innovative Lawyers Awards represent a unique analysis of the legal industry, assessing lawyers on their innovation both for clients and in their own businesses. They are widely regarded as the best researched in the market and celebrate the standout legal innovations of 2016.

Commenting on the shortlist success, Andrew Clinton, Managing Partner, said: “Our strategy is to become a market-driven organisation and to achieve that we have organised ourselves around the needs of our target clients. The firm has worked very hard to differentiate itself through innovation so we are delighted to see this effort recognised by the FT research team.”

“We’ve made some pioneering changes to our organisational structure and reward mechanisms. We’ve also implemented innovative partnerships with other legal support providers. It’s been a brave and entrepreneurial approach that allows us to focus more directly on the needs of our clients and drive the right behaviours internally.”

“The buyers of legal services have been complaining about the same issues for a very long time and yet law firms have been slow to respond. We recognised that to properly address those issues we’d need to break the mould and do things differently. We changed our operating model to create separate sales and service delivery teams. This enabled us to shake off the constraints of departmental silos so that we could change things for the benefit of our clients. Our sales teams focus their energy into understanding the needs of our target clients and designing sales propositions. Our service delivery teams then deliver the support that is required. We have also moved away from the outdated mechanism of rewarding people based on the time taken to complete a transaction or the value of the bill that is sent at the end of the matter.”

“We’re seeing some great results across the firm. In recruitment, we’ve seen candidates applying to us who buy into our vision and we have recruited 3 senior in-house lawyers, all of whom felt compelled by the firm’s approach. We’ve also seen significant growth in the business retained from large corporates and increasingly we are assisting with the transformation of their in-house legal teams. Our mid-corporate business has also increased, with higher-value consultancy-based legal support focussed directly on the need to maximise growth, improve business efficiency and minimise risk.”

The FT Innovative Lawyers Awards Europe 2016 will be announced at a black-tie gala dinner and ceremony taking place at the Natural History Museum in London on 5 October 2016.

Over the past 12 months, asb law has also been recognised by The Lawyer’s Hot 100 for 2016, shortlisted for the best leadership of innovation in the 2016 Managing Partner Forum Awards, shortlisted for regional team of the year in the 2016 Solicitors Journal Awards and a finalist in Legal Week’s 2016 Innovation Awards.
